D&D Fat Cat 2 into 1

MSRP: $899
Avg. Rating:

Description: The D&D Fat Cat is one of my own personal favorite 2 into 1 Harley pipes and that is my own personal motorcycle in the image above. Super sound quality consisting of a low, deep aggressive note at part throttle that will really wail when you crack the go stick. These pipes sound great and they look even better in my opinion. The D&D Fat Cat will give your bike a noticeable improvement in the low and mid-range power band making it an absolute joy to ride on the street and the top end power is simply awesome. The D&D 2 into 1 Fat Cat accomplishes this with a stepped header design that necks from 1 3/4" to 1 7/8" on the head pipe. It will work with forward or mid controls and in case you want one, a big bore baffle is available for the 95 CI to 103 CI bikes. Not recommended for lowered bikes.

Fat Cat Install
D&D Fat Cat 2 into 1
D&D is a relatively small company down in the heart of Texas but let's not judge this company by it's size. They happen to be the manufacturer of one of the best, if not THE best, 2 into 1 Harley Davidson exhaust pipe ever made, the D&D Fat Cat.
Many Harley traditionalists will shun the 2 into 1 design in favor of the more traditional 2 into 2 configuration that is more familiar to them. That's ok but if you are a fan of the 2 into 1 design then the D&D Fat Cat could be just the pipe you should be looking at.
D&D Fat Cat Construction
The D&D Fat Cat is remarkably simple but very high tech at the same time. The engineers at D&D employ a stepped header pipe that basically speeds up the exhaust gases as they exit the pipe. In addition, the 2 into 1 design also helps to evacuate the cylinder better due to the way the exhaust pulses dump into a common collector. In layman's terms, this makes the exhaust flow better, and therefore makes more power.
If you want to compare it to other header designs out there, the D&D Fat Cat transitions head pipe diameter from 1 3/4" up to 1 7/8" and is recommended for engines that range from 88ci up to 103 cubic inches. If that isn't enough for you, a big bore baffle is available for those who want to eek out every last bit of flow from their Fat Cat. Bear in mind that this comes at the expense of more noise.
You only have to open the box on a D&D Fat Cat and lift it out of the box one time to realize that this pipe isn't some chintzy piece of tin. It's very solid, very hefty and the construction seems to be first rate. The heat shields are good quality and they install very intuitively. The system is basically a two piece design with the "Y" pipe in the front and then the muffler body connects to the Y with a rear muffler bracket. Simple design and appears like it would be an easy install. The pieces are quality so let's see where we go from there.
D&D Fat Cat Installation
I am not going to spend a lot of time on the installation other than to say that it is quite easy. Many new owners are intimidated to work on their Harley Davidson's and maybe rightfully so. They are expensive after all, but installing a Harley Davidson exhaust system is a piece of cake in most cases. Touring bikes are some times a bit of a challenge with the crossover pipes but I have yet to see any Harley that took a rocket scientist to install.
The installation is simple, remove the old exhaust, make sure all of your bolt holes are clean and lay out all of your parts and pieces. Install the heat shields on the "Y" pipe but leave then loose, repeat leave them loose, repeat leave them loose. Get the idea? Leaving them loose will allow you to access bolts later on that you cannot reach once the heat shields are tightened down.
So you get the Y pipe started (make sure you transfer the O2 sensors first) and the bolts in place but everything left loose at this point. Install the muffler body onto the end of the Y and lineup with the supplied rear bracket. Once everything is in place, start snugging bolts down lightly working from the front to the rear. Follow recommended torque settings. I know I am making it sound easy, but quite frankly it is easy.
D&D Fat Cat Sound
I have to tell you this, and I mean every word of it...the D&D Fat Cat has to be the very best sounding Harley exhaust system on the planet. I have videos for you to watch but to describe it, the sound is a very deep and aggressive exhaust note but not so agressive, that it is obnoxious. Rather than loud, I would say it's DEEP, and it has a lot of bass to it if that makes sense. At part throttle and mid-throttle the D&D Fat Cat is deep and aggressive, when you crack the throttle and mean business, so does the D&D Fat Cat. It really wails at WOT.
I prefer this type of exhaust note to the blatty and overly loud exhaust note that many of the Harley pipes on the market produce. There is a place for every pipe as some people prefer the loud and blatty open baffle sound but not me. The D&D Fat Cat is an exhaust that you can keep your neighbors happy with when you need to but put a smile on your own face when you want to.
D&D Fat Cat Performance

I replaced a pair of Vance and Hines Big Shot Staggered pipes on my FXSTB, and while those are a great pipe, for me the D&D Fat Cat was the perfect pipe. The Big Shots are pretty loud and I love the look but they just weren't quite right for me. The bike dyno'd at 110hp and 107tq with the Big Shots on it and I haven't dyno'd the Fat Cat yet. It's noticeably more powerful though, especially in the low and mid-range. Not much can beat the torque that a well tuned 2 into 1 pipe gives in the mid range. Where I had to shift a gear before, I can now just roll on the throttle.
So I don't know how much more power the D&D Fat Cat produces over the Big Shots but I will say compared to stock, it's night and day and even compared to another pretty good aftermarket pipe, the power improvement is quite noticeable. The bike wails with the D&D Fat Cat on it, which is why I bought the pipe in the first place. If I get a chance to put it on the rollers this spring, I will share the dyno chart on here.
I was able to find a dyno chart online of someone who replaced a pair of Big Shots with a Fat Cat. The bike appears to be close to stock BUT notice the broad and flat torque curve produced by the Fat Cat vs. the Big Shots. This chart is not mine, but I would expect that mine would change a similar amount and most bikes would respond similarly. That broad and flat torque curve is what makes the pipe an absolute joy to a street driven bike.
D&D Fat Cat Summary
I don't know what more could be said in addition to what I have already posted other than to say that the D&D Fat Cat is a great pipe and compares quite favorably to any of the other pipes I have installed. Vance and Hines is an industry giant, but the D&D Fat Cat has chrome that is equally as good as the legendary Vance and Hines and the power improvement is pretty significant. My bike is worked over pretty good so the D&D Fat Cat really brings out the best in it as the Big Shots are no slouch either.
I installed the D&D Fat Cat on my own 2007 FXSTB and that is my bike in the picture above and I love it. I am a self admitted pipe junkie and I like to tinker so that makes the D&D Fat Cat about the 10th exhaust system I've had on my ride. Unfortunately it won't be the last as my bike is slammed to the ground and is lowered to the extreme, which I like, but the D&D Fat Cat is not friendly to a lowered bike. The Low Cat would be more appropriate for my ride, but I don't care for the look of the upturned muffler.
If you are looking for a great 2 into 1 Harley pipe and your bike is not lowered, then I can definitely recommend the D&D Fat Cat based on my own personal experiences. It's a great pipe, has held up well for almost 2 summers and does almost everything well. It fit the bike right, it installed easily and the components were good quality and it's simply a very good all around Harley Davidson 2 into 1 exhaust pipe.

Hear Them!
Check out these videos of the D&D Fat Cat 2 into 1 Harley Pipes. They are deep and low at part throttle and sound MUCH better than most 2 into 2 systems in my own opinion. They will wail at WOT though...which is what you want.
