Rinehart 2 into 1 Review
Rinehart 2 into 1
Rinehart is a pretty popular name in the Harley Davidson exhaust world and for good reason, they make a great product. Rinehart is subsidiary or some kind of partner with another heavyweight in the exhaust world and that would be BUB Enterprises. With two companies like these collaborating, then you know they have to be good. I want to share my thoughts on my experience with the Rinehart 2 into 1 pipe on my 2007 FXSTB so you can make a better decision as to whether they will make a great pipe for your motorcycle or not.
The Rinehart 2 into 1 exhaust pipe was my first experience with a 2 into 1 and I am soooo glad that I took the plunge. I've always read how great these style of pipes were due to the power increases, in fact, I'd heard so much propoganda that I started to dismiss it. Nothing can be that good right? Well, sort of. I had a pair of Vance and Hines Big Shot Staggered pipes on my bike when I went to Myrtle Beach bike week a year or so ago. I saw a pair of these in a vendor tent, and said why not. So on they went, I installed them in the carport of our beach rental one afternoon.
Rinehart 2 into 1 Construction
One of the things that the Rinehart 2 into 1 pipe has going for it is a lot of engineering. Rinehart designed this pipe to do a great job of evacuating the exhaust and therefore increase power, and they did a nice job. The Rinehart 2 into 1 utilizes a machined inlet that speeds up the exhaust gas to better evacuate the combustion chamber. The 2 into 1 design adds to that process by it's very design as the exhaust pulses dump into a common collector. In layman's terms, this makes the exhaust flow better, and therefore makes more power. I never claimed to be a physicist but I know what I like.
You only have to open the box on a set of these Rineharts to realize that these are a super nice 2 into 1 pipe. They are very solid and deceptively hefty for the size of the pipe. The welds, construction, heat shields and chroming all look, fit and function very well. The system is basically a two piece design with the "Y" pipe in the front and then the muffler body connects to the Y with a rear muffler bracket. A brilliantly chromed collector cover hides the joints and combined with the excellent heat shields and you've got a great looking exhaust pipe that appears to be very well designed.
Rinehart 2 into 1 Installation
I won't spend much time on the installation as this isn't rocket science. You can have the old pipes off and the new ones on in probably an hour and that's generous. I know that many new owners can be intimidated to work on their own motorcycle but these Harley Davidson's are a piece of cake. I installed these in a carport with a very basic tool kit that I always have in the truck, just in case.
The installation is simple, remove the old exhaust, make sure all of your bolt holes are clean and lay out all of your parts and pieces. Install the heat shields on the "Y" pipe but leave then loose, repeat leave them loose, repeat leave them loose. Get the idea? Leaving them loose will allow you to access bolts later on that you cannot reach once the heat shields are tightened down.
So you get the Y pipe started (make sure you transfer the O2 sensors first) and the bolts in place but everything left loose at this point. Install the muffler body onto the end of the Y and lineup with the supplied rear bracket. Once everything is in place, start snugging bolts down lightly working from the front to the rear. Follow recommended torque settings. I know I am making it sound easy, because it is easy.
Rinehart 2 into 1 Sound
If you've never heard a 2 into 1 then you should know they sound considerably different than a typical Harley Davidson exhaust pipe. They are not as loud and typically have more "bass" to the exhaust note, not quite as blatty as a regular 2 into 2 style Harley exhaust. Now, 2 into 1 pipes are different and Rineharts are even different still. Rinehart exhaust pipes have a bit of a unique sound all their own, once you've heard them a few times, you can usually pick them out of a lineup without even seeing them. At part throttle and mid-throttle the Rinehart 2 into 1 pipe emits a deep and aggressive exhaust note, when you crack the throttle then it emits a deep roar that sounds much better than 2 into 2 pipes in my opinion.
I definitely prefer this type of exhaust note to most of the other Harley exhaust pipes on the market. There is a bike for every pipe though and some people prefer that roar so maybe for you, the 2 into 1 pipe isn't quite your thing. A Rinehart 2 into 1 exhaust pipe is an exhaust that you can keep your neighbors happy if you need to but still put a smile on your face when you want to.
Rinehart 2 into 1 Performance
I am an admitted pipe junkie and I like to swap out pipes a lot. I had a pair of Vance and Hines Big Shot Staggered pipes on my FXSTB at the time that I bought these Rineharts, and while those are a great pipe, I really wanted to try a 2 into 1 exhaust pipe. The Big Shots are pretty loud and I love the look but they just weren't quite right for me. When I bought the Rinehart's the bike had just dyno'd at 110hp and 107tq with the Big Shots on it but I never dyno'd the Rineharts. I will say that on the top end it feels about the same as the Big Shots, but is noticeably more powerful in the mid-range. I think it's a function of that 2 into 1 torque curve that they are famous for.
So I can't tell you how much more power the Rinehart 2 into 1 pipe produces over the Big Shots but I will say compared to stock, it's night and day and even compared to another pretty good aftermarket pipe, the power improvement is quite noticeable. I don't think peak power would change a bit, but mid-range most certainly. I am starting to understand how the 2 into 1 pipes earned that reputation I was talking about.
Rinehart 2 into 1 Summary
I don't know what more could be said in addition to what I have already posted other than to say that the Rinehart 2 into 1 exhaust is a great pipe and compares quite favorably to any of the other pipes I have installed. The fit and finish was superb and the Rinehart 2 into 1 just drips in high quality chrome plating and they look great. I must admit that I really dig the billet Rinehart signature endcap on the pipe and I am sure that you will agree that they are visually appealing.
I installed the Rinehart 2 into 1 pipe on my own 2007 FXSTB and that is my bike in the picture above and I love it. I already admitted to being a pipe junkie and I like to tinker so that means the Rinehart 2 into 1 pipe didn't stay on my bike very long, I have already changed it out for a D&D Fat Cat 2 into 1 pipe but it wasn't due to any fault of the Rinehart. It is a great pipe, I just have issues......ask my wife.
So in summary, if you like the way they look and sound, then you won't be disappointed with the Rinehart 2 into 1 exhaust pipe, at least not in my opinion.
